Ducks are friendly, curious creatures who enjoy living in family groups. The term “Mother Duck” has long been used to describe a woman who is especially devoted to her children and is an intuitive mother. There is quite the history of symbolism behind this often under-valued bird and this is what I am trying to capture in this design.

In some cultures, a Mother Duck represents family and healthy social relationships. Ducks can be a symbol of freedom, flexibility, and adaptability.

A Mother Duck is also a person who has been described as a woman who can appreciate the value of their “happy place”, their home, which is comfortable and warm, with the people she loves. Although ducks love to travel, they will always return home to recharge.

Just like the old saying, “Water off a duck’s back”, someone who resonates with ducks knows that people change and do things for their own reasons and not to take things personally. This life is a journey we all learn from.

Fun fact…did you know that ducks sleep with half their brains awake so they can still detect predators and danger. I’m sure a lot of us Mums can relate to that!

And just one last fun fact to share…After their ducklings are hatched, Mother Ducks molt. I did not know this! They replace all their feathers and get new ones. Apart from us human Mums also having the dreaded hair loss after birth, I think this is a great symbolism for how some things are lost and then gained, not just physically but mentally and emotionally, when we transition to becoming a mother.
